Find out why the Cabarete Kite Festival is a week certainly not to be missed!
Cabarete’s consistent trade winds, warm waters and hearty amounts of sunshine make the tiny beach town a top wind sports destination. This reputation has led to Cabarete hosting many prestigious kitesurf and windsurf competitions. Some of these include the World Kite Tour, PKRA and Master Of The Ocean. This year is set to be no different with The Cabarete Kite Festival taking place 9 – 15 July.
A rather fitting name for such a windy town, the Cabarete Kite Festival takes place over seven days. It combines water sports, ocean awareness and entrepreneurship. Who wouldn’t want to make the beach their office? Kiteboarding legend Susi Mai organizes the event, so you know it’s going to be fun-filled and action-packed week.
The Kitesurf Competition
Amongst all the networking and action will be the GKA Kiteboarding World Tour 2018 Air Games. As our summer months offer strong winds and ramps of water, Cabarete is the perfect spot for it. The event also provides an incredible opportunity for our local Dominican talent to compete against top international athletes. Riders can earn a place on the World Tour and tap into the global scene.
The new competition format highlights the most well-rounded and diverse twin tip riders in the world while showcasing the diversity within kiteboarding. Susi also realizes how important it is to prove that kiteboarding is, in fact, a spectators sport. For that reason, the event emphasizes simple judging criteria and includes a big air competition ensuring that even non-kiters can understand and get pumped on the action.
Our Local Cabarete Favorites
On both Kite Beach and Cabarete Beach, you will spot kitesurfers boosting as high as the clouds. Some of our local favorites include Nisael Gomez, Luis Alberto Cruz, Brayan Betance, Edinson Martinez, and Joselito Del Rosario.
