Find out where and what to look for when renting a car in Cabarete
Cabarete is a quaint town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Its size makes almost everything within walking distance. Combine this with the variety of public transport and it couldn’t be easier to get around. However, if you’re wandering a little further about or have the family, a car rental in Cabarete could be a more convenient choice.
What to look for when renting a car in Cabarete?
As you wander through the town, you’ll spot a number of signs and establishments offering cars for rent, but how do you know which one to choose? Here are our top things to look for when renting a car:
Firstly and most importantly you want to make sure you are fully covered and have good insurance. We recommend reading through the fine print to check exactly what you’re covered for. Also, check for breakdown cover and make sure you save the necessary phone numbers in case you need them.
Wear and Tear
You wouldn’t cast off in your rowing boat without checking for your paddles first. The same applies to cars. Quickly check the lights, horn, tires, oil and water before you commit to the rental. It’s also a legal requirement here to have a fire extinguisher, warning triangle, luminescent vest and first aid kit in your car, so check for those too. Once everything is looking good, we recommend taking photos and video clearly showing the condition of the car prior to you driving it.
Reliable Rental Car Companies in Cabarete
The best way to find a reliable company is to ask around. You’ll find the most popular names that will come up are OK Motors and Avis Car Rentals. There are obviously many more but these are the main two due to their range of hatchbacks, family size SUVs and insurance coverage. Many of these companies will also deliver the car to you. Now that’s about convenience.
We always recommend using taxis and public transport here since the roads are not as organized as you may be used to. With a lot of motorbike traffic and cars travelling at various speeds, you want to be watching 3 cars ahead and using your mirrors constantly. Always be extremely careful when making a left hand turn. Drivers tend to unexpectedly pass on the left hand side…and it happens often. So look and look at least two more times before making a left hand turn. Beware that often drivers don’t stop at the red lights, so again, keep your eyes open for disobedient drivers. We understand that it is often easier to rent a car for your stay, we just remind you to drive with extreme caution.
